Course & Activity Guide Description
Antioch Community High School Course & Activity Guide provides the following course description:
Elective 9-12, 1 semester 1/2 credit
This course will introduce students to the AutoCAD drawing program and its basic commands. With the use of Computer Assisted Design (CAD), students will learn the basics of mechanical and architectural drafting. Learning AutoCAD and basic drafting is the main emphasis of this course. Students pursuing an engineering or architecture career are encouraged to complete at least one drawing class.
Text Used in Class
Various text material used throughout the class. See instructor for more information.
Detailed Course Outline
The following topics are taught in Technical Drawing 1 class:
GETTING FAMILIAR WITH AUTOCAD
AutoCAD window, starting a drawing, panning and zooming to adjust your view, understanding the layout tabs, understanding how command options work
UNDERSTANDING THE DRAFTING TOOLS
Understanding the AutoCAD coordinate system, setting up a drawing, using a digital t square and triangle (ortho & polar tracking), getting a visual reference with the grid mode, snapping to the grid or other regular intervals, changing the grid and snap settings, selecting exact locations on objects (osnap)
DRAWING 2D OBJECTS
Drawing straight lines, drawing circles and arcs, drawing curves, drawing ellipses, drawing parallel lines, working with hatch patterns and solid fills, drawing regular polygons, using construction lines
EDITING AUTOCAD OBJECTS
Selecting objects, editing the windows way (grips), changing objects with grips and dynamic input, controlling objects using the properties palette
EDITING WITH THE MODIFY TOOLBAR
Selecting objects, erasing objects, joining objects, moving and copying, scaling, stretching, and rotating, breaking an object into two, editing polylines
GETTING ORGANIZED WITH LAYERS
Creating and assigning layers, setting the current layer, controlling layer visibility, finding the layers you want, organizing visual content through properties
CREATING THE TEXT
Adding and formatting text, understanding text and scale, adding words with the single-line text object
USING DIMENSIONS
Understanding the parts of an AutoCAD dimension, dimensioning in the model or layout tab, drawing linear dimensions, dimensioning nonorthogonal objects, measuring angles, editing dimensions
LAYING OUT AND PRINTING YOUR DRAWING
Setting up a drawing for printing, printing your drawing, controlling color, lines, and fills through plot style
Activities
Students will use AutoCAD and Rhinoceros software to complete technical drawings. Students will also make products using AutoCAD software, Rhinoceros software, and other computer-aided machining (CAM) software suites.
The following technical drawings are completed in class. For information on the products that students make click here. To facilitate faster page loading, this section is continued upon multiple pages.
