Welcome to Health Class!!  Our health department objective is to provide current health information in such a way that you can evaluate your current health habits, positive and/or negative ways that encourage you to achieve a healthier lifestyle.  We hope to accomplish this by exposing students to a course that meets the needs of today’s teens by focusing on health issues from an adolescent perspective.

Course Objectives
To develop skills of listening, comprehension, speaking, reading and writing.
To familiarize students with basic vocabulary and information for good decision making.
To develop an understanding of dignity, respect, integrity and honesty for self and others.
To compare and contrast differences in healthy and unhealthy behaviors.
To have a greater understanding on how actions today could affect your future.

Required Materials

1 inch 3-ring binder
Loose-leaf Paper in binder
Pencil/Pen
Health Text book

Course Expectations     
Note taking: Students are expected to take notes on their loose-leaf paper in binder.
Preparation for class: Students must be prepared daily by bring required materials.  
Organization: Students must keep and organize all notes and handouts in binder. Binder and notes will be due upon teacher’s request.
Make-up policy:  Students are allowed one day per day of excused absence to make up work.
Late work policy: THERE IS NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED!  *Unless pre-arranged*This means if you have a test or project assigned 1 week or more in advance it is due on the due date!!

Classroom Policies
Attendance policy: Attendance is essential to achieving a good grade.  If you are absent it is your responsibility to ask about any work that was missed.
New school attendance policies will apply.
For any unexcused absence a phone call will be made home.
If absent on the day of a test or quiz, arrangements must be made with your teacher to have the test made up.
Tardy Policy: You are tardy if you are not IN your seat when the bell rings.  
School tardy policy will be followed.
Late forms will be filled out when entering class late for either excused or unexcused reasons. This will minimize disruptions for the other students.
Respect everyone in this classroom.  
Meetings with teacher can be arranged through e-mail or a meeting form which will be located in the classroom.
No food, candy or drinks other than water are allowed in class.
NO HEADPHONES/ CELL PHONES/ IPODS/ OR ANY OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICE ARE ALLOWED TO BE SEEN ONCE IN THE CLASSROOM.
First offense: will be taken away and given to the dean.
Second offense: referral and phone call home.


Grading Policy

Grades are assigned on the basis of total points accumulated throughout the semester using a weighted scale.
Daily participation points may be given.
Unexcused absences will receive no credit for any work during class including quizzes and tests.
Daily homework will be handed in to a homework folder upon arrival to class.

-know cardiovascular diseases and respiratory diseases related to smoking
-short term and long term effects of tobacco
-how does tobacco use cause cancer? What types of cancer?
-smokers vs non-smokers rights – what are the issues for each person?
-categories of drugs know and describe symptoms – examples for each
-understand effects both physically and psychologically for drugs
-marijuana what it is, type of drug, effects mental and physical – for or against legalization?
-know refusal skills for all of these topics and interventions to help a friend
-short term /long term effects and categories of drugs
-drug fact sheet know the information for your drug specifically
