Captain and Award Winners

Josh Beckman- Sophomore- Distance/ Pole vault Captain- True Captain’s Award

Josh was chosen as the captain of the distance and pole vault groups.  Josh has exemplified what a true captain should be.  Josh has become a student of the sport.  Its very hard to find Josh not doing a crazy drill for the pole vault on the track or in the weight room.  Josh has also become a dedicated distance runner.  Josh was a runner you could always count on to put his best effort forward.  My most memorable moment of Josh is when he cracked his head doing the pole vault.  After seeing the trainer Josh went to the 3200 meter and ran his best time of the season.  Minutes after that grueling race Josh went on to place in the pole vault with his personal best.  Josh is a true teammate and has a great future in track and field in the years to come.

Lorenzo Gomez- Junior- Sprinter Captain- Walter Payton Award Winner

If young student athletes want something to follow they don’t need to go any further than Lorenzo Gomez.  Lorenzo had perfect attendance throughout the entire season.  Lorenzo was the backbone of the sprint relays and open sprint events this year.  You can always count on Lorenzo to get out and effectively start relay’s the right way.  Lorenzo is also a work horse in the weight room.  Lorenzo is one athlete that coaches don’t ever have to worry about he always does the right thing.  Whether its in the class room, the weight room or on the track Lorenzo always maintained focus and determination.  He exemplifies what a leader is.  My fondest memory of Lorenzo’s Junior season was his effort and leadership at the county invite, I believe that Lorenzo really grew up as a leader and teammate because of his focus before, during and after he meet.  Lorenzo is also a captain of the football team and will make a lasting impact on this school.  Lorenzo is a member of the school record 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams.

Bill Quade- Junior- “Pre” Award Winner

Bill was chosen as the inaugural winner of the distance award for a number of reasons.  Bill was the lead-off runner on the school record holding 4x800 meter relay.  Bill has become an effective lead-off runner.  Bill never gave the baton to Brain, Ethan, Josh or Tony without putting us in a position to succeed.  Bill is a tough hard nose runner that has gotten many complements from coaches throughout our conference and the area.  Bill solidified him-self at the Grant Invite when he was asked to put the team before himself.  Bill ran his best times to that point in three events.  He ran personal best splits in the 4x800 and the 4x400 and he also ran his best time in the open 800.  Bill has a future that will include the state meet in 2006.

Andrew Stein- Sophomore- Jumps Captain- Point Machine Award

As you look at every single meet result in the newspaper the one thing that constantly jumps out at you is the last name Stein, or Stine as some papers printed it.  Andrew was point machine in every sense of the word.  He currently holds 5 records at Lakes high school.  Triple jump, long jump, 110 high hurdles, 300 intermediate hurdles, and the 4x400 meter relay.  He just scores points.  He averaged well over 10 points in every meet he competed this year.  Andrew was the driving force behind this years team, every athlete looked to Andrew for motivation and determination.  He is a great teammate, he is always on time, never talks back, he gloats, he supports everybody, he respects his opponents, he respect his family, but best of all he respects himself.  He has a bright future ahead of himself in both soccer and track and field.  A two time state qualifier and conference champion is well with in Andrew’s grasp if he continues to commit himself to track and field.
