Creating File Listings by Mark Thompson Sometimes you may want to make files which are not web pages available to others. These might include worksheets, assignments, photos, or any other material you have available. As long as the other person has the necessary software to open and view the file, this can be a convenient way to share information. Then, place copies of the files you wish to make available to others by dragging their document icons to the folders you created in the previous step. Another way to copy files is to open one of your new folders and then use the "Upload" command on the "File" menu to locate the files and copy them. Finally, create links to the directory of files by highlighting the text or image that will become the link, then clicking the "Edit" menu and selecting "Make Link…" Enter the name of the folder you are linking to and then click "OK." If the folder is contained inside another folder, enter the full path, separating the names of folders with forward slashes(/). When the user clicks on a link to a directory of files, a listing of files and folders within that directory opens. When the user clicks on a file, it will either display in the browser window or download to the user's computer and then open if the necessary software is present. Click here to see a sample directory. Remember that if you rename your folders, you'll need to re-do any links you've made to those directories. The same is true if you move any folders from one location to another. That’s it for file listings. See the list below for other web publishing options: |
